Comment on Writer of the month: Stories from behind the Berlin Wall by Paul Sayles

This is a tremendously well done presentation on a subject I had some first person experience with. From 1977-1980 I spent three years in the US Army assigned to West Berlin in one of the Infantry Battalions charged with defending the American Sector. I was able to visit the East from time to time and so came to see the Eastern government in action. I recall one afternoon, I was sitting in a café at just about 1500. The waitress took my order and then the time signal sounded on the radio that was playing. She ran over and changed to station and suddenly we were all listening to the American Forces Network Country and Western Hour. A bit later I was walking down the street and could hear C&W coming from other shops. Radio as well as TV gave the East Germans a glimpse of western actions. The café waitress was amazed that as an American I didn’t care for C&W music as I said I preferred classical music.
